February 14, 2018 – Baltimore, MD – Mayor touts low crime numbers to start 2018, but says there’s more to be done.
Mayor Catherine Pugh on Wednesday touted a drop in crime to start the year, largely crediting her violence reduction initiative, while saying there was still more work to do.
Pugh, speaking at her weekly press conference, said between Jan. 1 and Feb. 13, there had been a 35 percent drop in homicides across the city compared to the same time period last year. The mayor also said between Jan. 1 and Feb. 10, all types of violent crime were down 30 percent year-over-year.
The city started out February with a 12-day period without a homicide, but that streak was broken earlier this week when two men were killed in East Baltimore in separate incidents. There have been 29 murders in the city since the beginning of the year.
Still, Pugh said the early drop-off isn’t enough.
