“You say the ring is dangerous, far more dangerous than I guess. In what way?’ ‘In many ways,’ answered the wizard. ‘It is far more powerful than I ever dared to think at first, so powerful that in the end it would utterly overcome anyone of mortal race who possessed it. It would possess him.“
J.R.R. Tolkien, from “The Fellowship of the Ring”
March 22, 2011 – Oral Tongue Cancer Rates Rising in Young White Women – Medscape
The incidence of oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma has been rising in young white American women, according to a new report. For the past 3 decades, the incidence has been increasing in white men and white women 18 to 44 years of age, but the trend is most pronounced in young white women.
In a report published online March 7 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the authors found that the incidence of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma was declining for all age groups. The incidence of oral cavity and tongue cancer also was decreasing for nonwhite individuals.
However, among people 18 to 44 years of age, the incidence of oral tongue cancer climbed 28% between 1975 and 2007. Among white people in this age group, the incidence increased 67%. The rising rates were most dramatic for white women, with a jump of 111%.
Lower mouth cancer rates among everybody, all ages. Everyone, that is, but young people.
What are young people doing, moreso than other-age people, that would give them mouth cancer?
And, among young people, the rate more than doubles when you get to young white people. What are young white people doing, moreso than other-race young people, that would give them mouth cancer?
And, among young white people, women have an increase almost double that of their male counterparts. What are young white women doing, in particular, moreso than their young white male counterparts, that would give them mouth cancer?
It’s frustrating and embarrassing to have to prove such a simple, obvious thesis.
But I am doing so.
